Cuba, the largest island in the Caribbean, has a land area approximately the size of the State of Pennsylvania. Key West is closer to Havana than Miami. Car ferries used to traverse from Stock Island to Havana prior to the US Embargo. Hemingway also traversed the Straits of Florida between Key West and Cojimar many times. Virgin beaches, three mountain ranges, waterfalls, tobacco fields in Pinar del Rio, tropical forests, colonial cities are all to be found in Cuba during Mardi Gras and throughout the year. Except for an occasional Nor'Easter which blows huge waves against El Malecon, the weather in January and February in Cuba is most pleasant with an average daily temperature of 26 degrees C ( 79 degrees F), 62% humidity and little precipitation (May through November being the rainy season in Cuba). Direct, non-stop flights to Cuba are available from all major cities in the Western Hemisphere including, for OFAC licensed travelers from the USA, the cities of Miami, New York City and Los Angeles. A valid tourist card or visa (for media workers), a valid and current passport and a return airline ticket are also needed to enjoy Mardi Gras in Varadero.
